When a failed terrorist attack on the Boston Art Museum draws a young gay couple into the plot by abducting and holding them hostage, one of the two men’s lives suddenly and horrifically comes to an end, while the other is saved at the last minute by the swift actions of a hard-nosed and dedicated detective. Drawn into the life of the man he’s just saved (a man who bears a striking resemblance to someone he loved and tragically lost), it soon becomes obvious that there’s more to their friendship than meets the eye. Through a series of serendipitous events, both men must revisit painful memories and emotions once believed put to rest. Yet what they ultimately discover is that in order to find a future together, they must first find a way of letting go of their pasts.

Detective Harry Barnett - who was in charge of the investigation - broke up protocol and followed Art to the warehouse where he and John were held - and saves Art.

Meanwhile, in Boston, Harry has to solve the murder of a famous Red Sox ballplayer, Casper Cox. Mr. Cox was sodomized and strangled. Because he was found in a sleazy motel, Harry's partner, Victor Mendoza, makes bigoted remarks against gays. This infuriates Harry who makes Victor walk home.
Apparently, Harry has some unresolved gay issues. When Harry was in High School, he was in love with Cord, a baseball player who is killed by a fast ball at a baseball game. Art looks a lot like Cord, and this has awakened his homosexual feelings to the point where another insensitive joke from Mendoza - about rape - drives Harry to punch him.
Mendoza transfers to another precinct. Harry signs up for police intramural baseball. He faces Mendoza - as the pitcher - and Mendoza hits him in the head. Harry wakes up in the hospital and is now blind.
As Art gets better in the Cape, Esther comes to take him home. Esther tells Art that Harry needs him. Art decides to take Harry home to his apartment in Boston to nurse him back to health. The doctors believe that Harry will regain his vision eventually.
An investigation from Internal affairs concludes that Mendoza acted with intent to cause harm, and Mendoza is suspended without pay for a month.
Harry and Art fall in love - and as Art is driving Harry to a doctor's appointment, he loses control of his Honda Civic. After the accident, Harry has to act fast to save Art, and Harry regains his vision.
It is clear that Mendoza messed with Art's brakes, but by the time Harry concludes this, Mendoza is already dead. The book ends up with Harry and Art living happily ever after.
The book is an easy and mindless read. Mr. Sommer tries to use the third person point of view, but he's not too adept with it. The point of views change abruptly and without any warning to the reader - confusing things. The plot is too cheesy and full of cliches. Mr. Sommer had to have an example of all the gay themes: talk briefly about them, as if checking them off a laundry list.
The author explains everything. The principles of "show don't tell" never crossed his mind.
It reads in a few hours and for those of you who want an entertaining mindless book - this is perfect for you....

In Someone Else Hands Sam Sommer 9780990471646 Books Reviews
What a great read! Well developed and original characters, intriguing, thrilling plot and exciting till the end. I had to immediately purchase and read JACOBS' DIARY, Mr. Sommer's previous novel, which I somehow overlooked. That one's also a winner and a must-read!
This story is tense and romantic all at once. Art and John are lovable characters - similar but different in the very best ways and their individual strength shines through as they find themselves in the middle of a horrific situation. This book is definitely worth a read, I'm looking forward to more work from this author.
