Reconsidering The Purpose Driven Life is for a reader who wants to think more carefully about the book The Purpose Driven Life What on Earth Am I Here For, than perhaps many readers do. Walter James Mitchell describes this first essay in its opening paragraph
The Purpose Driven Life What on Earth Am I Here For is a work of evangelism by an American pastor named Rick Warren, first published in 2003 and republished in an expanded edition in 2012. Since I direct my discussion to readers already somewhat acquainted with Warren’s book, I will not introduce it further. For those who intend to read The Purpose Driven Life and who have not yet done so, I begin by discussing briefly, why it seems good for one to read the works of the Biblical writers beforehand. For those who have already read The Purpose Driven Life or who are doing so now, I discuss why it seems good—against what seems to be the usual order—to consider Warren’s claims well, before one decides to believe them. After my general discussion, I begin at the beginning of The Purpose Driven Life, the cover, and begin to discuss everything that seems more important to consider carefully when reading the book. Even on the cover, Warren makes several indications of the way he thinks of human beings, and I bring them to the reader’s attention. Regarding the dedication, I show how far Warren goes both to gratify the reader and to raise one’s opinion of the book. Regarding the introduction, I discuss Warren’s description of his book and dispute a point of it. I also discuss Warren’s recommendations for reading The Purpose Driven Life and consider whether it seems good for a reader to agree to them. Regarding the first section’s title page, I discuss an additional detail suggesting the way in which Warren thinks of human beings, and showing how much may be at stake in Warren’s choices of translation. Coming to his book’s first chapter, I discuss Warren’s teaching, assumptions, strategy, and omissions in some detail. In concluding, I give special attention to Warren’s dismissal of philosophy, explain why a reader may wish to read the works of the political philosophers, and make a suggestion for introductory reading that I very much hope some readers will enjoy. In future works, I hope to discuss the rest of the chapters of The Purpose Driven Life.

The author must have a personal vendetta against Rick Warren. This whole book is written as if it started out as a book report for a class assignment and then the author thought it would be good enough to publish as a book. He only critics the front matter and the first chapter because the author is so highly critical that it would be too tedious and depressing to read a critic of the entire book. If he is so critical of this book one would think that no other book in the entire collection would be sufficient for him except his own.
